Periodic Font Table

For long-time printer industry players like me and I am guessing, many of my readers, the developed acquaintance with the world of typefaces has been a beneficial by-product. Knowing the history and purpose behind many of the fonts weve come to know and love adds color and interest to the business.

Kudos to design firm Squidspot for coming up with the table, and thanks Lifehacker for the explanatory blog post, "Periodic Table of Typefaces Schools You on Fonts". And thanks for @PrinterNews and their tweet sending me to the post.

And check out the comments below the blog post at Lifehacker -- pity the poor soul who asked about Arial and its absence!

Google Chrome Printing again

A little less than a year ago, I looked into the printing capabilities of the new Google (NASDAQ GOOG) Chrome browser (see "Google Chrome Printing") on its first public Beta release. That post was rather inconclusive (though I did follow up with a description and link to a nice little tweak to add a print button to Chrome (see "Google Chrome Printing revisited"). The most notable point about the first post turned out to be the "fine print" controversy that swirled around the browser in its first weeks post-release, driving search engine traffic my way, when what Id covered was only about the programs printing facility, not Googles purported devious intentions hidden away in Chromes EULA.

Yesterday, Google Chrome, this time designated a planned new Operating System for Netbooks, burst onto the scene yesterday, there was nary a mention of printing, which is not too surprising. Of course the big angle of the story is the affront to Microsoft (NASDAQ MSFT), who recently fired a surprisingly on-target shot across Googles bow with their Bing search engine.

The most relevant printing and imaging tidbit I have found so far is from the released list of Google Chrome OS partners. Printer leader HP (NYSE HPQ) is on the list along with other PC-and-chip vendors like Acer, ASUS, Freescale, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba, so its obviously a PC/Netbook play for them, but the one seeming outlier on the list (to me at least) is Adobe (NASDAQ ADBE). This one needs some study! A simple explanation for long-time industry observers could be simply "anything to align against Microsoft" but there is certainly more to it than that!

The Importance Of Printer Repairs

Kamis, 30 Januari 2014

We have all been there: your printer breaks down at the last minute, leaving you to rush down the street at midnight, hoping that the office is still unlocked. Though most of us own printers, very few of us actually have any idea how to fix them. The problem may be as complex or as simple as a clogged nozzle or an empty ink cartridge; regardless, a second opinion should always be gained before moving forward. The printer repairs are absolutely the most efficient way to tackle your printer problems without breaking the bank.

In todays world, it is absolutely essential that each and every one of us have a working printer. Whether at home or in the office, printers allow you to quickly and efficiently print documents while on the go. While convenience is paramount, there are a plethora of reasons to worry about your printers health; imagine going to class without a paper to hand in, or arriving at work without any presentation materials! Treating your printer well means an investment in your future!

It is absolutely essential that you address the problem as soon as it arises. Any reputable and experienced printer repair specialist should offer to investigate the problem on-site. This means far less trouble for you. They should work quickly and efficiently to restore the convenience of a personal printer to your life.

For each and every kind of printer on the market, there are dozens of repair men waiting for a call. For example, a photographer would never dream of hiring a repair specialist who is only qualified for xerox machine repairs; a decision like that would put the well-being of their printer at risk! Instead, they would find a professional who is licensed and capable of addressing the issues brought up by their particular machine. The same is true for printers kept in the home; be sure to find a licensed practitioner who is familiar with your particular make and model of printer.

If you are in the market for a reputable printer repair hp service in your area, consider doing a quick internet search. A simple search will yield thousands of results for you to choose from; printer problems are so common these days that there should be dozens within your area. Friends and family are often a great source of advice on the matter; consider asking around. They may be able to refer you to a qualified specialist. Whether you are at home or in the office, printer repairs are absolutely essential.

August Observations Go Go Go Little Printer

Go, Go, Go, Little Printer
Jim Lyons Observations August 2013

I must say that in the nearly two years since first finding out about Berg Cloud’s Little Printer, the cheerful refrain of “Go, go, go, Little Printer” (to the tune of “Little Queenie”, a Chuck Berry original tune frequently covered by the likes of The Beatles and Rolling Stones, has been stuck in my head. That song’s positive, upbeat spirit just seems to go along perfectly with the trademark smiling face that has come to be associated with Little Printer, first during its preshipment publicity phase, and then in its two periods of production and shipment. As you can see from the following links, I’ve been watching this product for a while.

November, 2012, Little Printer Ships

December, 2012, Happy New Year

July, 2013, Please Mr Postman

Just last month I discussed the anticipation of my own Little Printer’s arrival, and in cliffhanger fashion – though maybe not quite as dramatic as “Who shot JR?” – I ended the column with the just-arrived Little Printer shipping box at my feet, still sealed, and asked the rhetorical questions, “So how does it work, you might ask?” and “How do I like it, and can I recommend it to others?”

Although I hedged my bets by stating that “after a few days – or, more likely, weeks or even months – I (would) report my findings,” at that point I anticipated the first installation and use of the product within days (if not hours) of finishing that post. But schedules being what they usually are – and in this case, with some new classes starting (both as a student and teacher) and another important new product dominating my attention for much of the elapsed time – it has taken me almost exactly a full month to get through the initial installation and evaluation stage. (And by the way, for those who keep track of my other blogs and tweets, you know that the big distraction was that I became an official glass-wearing Google Glass Explorer this August as well.)

Compare and contrast

So before going on to at least a few of the merits of Little Printer I have discovered, we should reflect, in the fine academic tradition, by conducting a “compare and contrast” on the two evaluation processes I’ve been involved with recently, and thus reflect more generally on early product testing as well as general peaks and valleys of being an early adopter. The table below shows some of the comparisons and contrasts I’ve come up with so far.

Google Glass Explorer
Little Printer
Entry into the program
Be invited by Google to be an Explorer, based on “application by tweet” (program now closed). Essentially a beta program but with free-form feedback requirements.
Order online since it is a product in production.
“Buy in”
Pay $1,500, travel to Google Office (at additional expense) in San Francisco, Los Angeles or New York for pickup and training.
Pay $249 for printer, bridge and extra paper. Ships via FedEx.
Registration
Requires Google+ and Gmail account.
Register with Berg Cloud.
Smartphone integration
Yes – for data access via Bluetooth tethering.
Yes – for remote control.
User (Jim Lyons) comparisons
Has features of a smartphone. Its heads-up, hands-off ability for image/video capture is its most immediate selling point. Might think of it as an overgrown Bluetooth headset – wearable, tied to a smartphone, but with screen and online access.
Much more of an information solution than a “printer,” per se, as the hardware works in conjunction with a smartphone and back-end information services. Might think of HP’s Instant Delivery or more recent Scheduled Delivery, though scaled down to a much more convenient (for some, anyway) size. (See http://jimlyonsobservations.blogspot.com/2013/05/may-2013-observations-all-news-thats.html.)

Analysis
My Little Printers "Bridge" sits around back with other infrastructure items

The Little Printer itself has a spot "up front" in the office

Reflecting on the two, I think having Berg Cloud’s Little Printer as an early customer is more like when I was an early buyer of the original Apple iPhone in 2007. I remember one of my marketing students having one of the very first devices that July and showing it off in class. I got on board shortly after with the intent of leapfrogging from the laggard position in mobile phones I had found myself in. I remember attending an August conference and finding myself in discussions with several BlackBerry users who turned up their noses at iPhone and insisted they could never “downgrade” to one. But later that year, in December, I was at a niece’s wedding with lots of younger folks around, and during the various festivities, I spotted other iPhone users. They spotted me as well, giving me a subtle acknowledgement as motorcyclists still do today when passing on the road. It was the cool thing to be (an iPhone user, that is), and this was before there were even apps – imagine! So is Little Printer with its information services; upon installation, I immediately used my iPhone5 to sign up for its “new movies this week” and “Spanish word of the day”.

My Google Glass experiences (chronicled in my own dedicated blog, "Glass Half Full") are more like true beta testing experiences. Google Glass is not a finished product, and though it certainly foreshadows great things to come in wearable computing, what eventually gets released to the general public will probably be much more refined. Similar to using Androids if you are accustomed to using iOS machines, it’s just a little creakier all the way around. But that is just my opinion at this point, and it is subject to change.
I got to pick my own Little Printer face via my iPhone (screen shot here)
Anyway, my experience with the Little Printer in just the short time I’ve been working with it confirms what I have been building on in past musings: It has captured the imagination of so many because of its solutionlike nature with respect to information and communication.

I plan to blog much more about my experiences with Little Printer as I go along with it, and I will post a separate entry with many of the photos I captured during the very fulfilling out-of-the-box experience I had as well as the initial printing I did. And as I dredge the memory banks for historic pop-culture references, as I have already twice here by going with “Little Queenie” and “Who Shot J.R.?,” I finish with another, even older one. To paraphrase “Casablanca”, “Little Printer, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

October Observations aptiQmobile™ gives a boost to Pull Printing

October 2013 Observations
aptiQmobile™ gives a boost to Pull Printing

As readers of my monthly “Observations” contribution might recognize, it takes a certain combination of factors to really get me excited about writing a column. (And I still use the term “column” for my monthly blog posts just because I always have, I guess.)

For 95 straight months now, I have been fortunate to find topics, at least some of the time, that bring together a little industry history as well as look to the future – ideally with a congruence of topics that I have covered previously. Sometimes I throw in a touch of irony or surprise too. Add a good basic marketing or business principle or two, and I’m in blogger heaven. When it all lines up, the research and the writing just flow, and my biggest issue will be keeping my word count down to a reasonable level that won’t chase away readers.

History
This month’s connections start at the DEMO Fall conference held earlier this month in Santa Clara, Calif. One of my favorite haunts to find new products and solutions, I have attended DEMO conferences for nearly 20 years – often once, sometimes twice a year. The first 10 years or so were from the vendor side, but since 2006, I have attended as a member of the press in an effort to share these connections with my readers. Google “DEMO” and “Jim Lyons Observations,” and you will find many of these summaries from DEMOs past.

Pull printing
One of the emerging features among enterprise-oriented print solutions over the last few years has been that of pull printing. Touted as a labor-saving, resource-conserving, security-focused feature, “pull printing” describes the capability for users to print to a shared device anywhere in a building or a campus, then retrieve the print job by entering a PIN or, even slicker, with the wave of a user’s security card at the selected printer. The use case fits nicely with evolving office environments, including more shared printer/MFP/copiers, and stresses management control, security and mobility.

aptiQMobile
One of the companies demonstrating this year at DEMO struck a familiar chord for me, though not through the normal channels. Ingersoll Rand, a North Carolina-based industrial firm, was a customer of my employer’s in a long-ago previous life, and one of its business sectors, Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies, was on the agenda with its aptiQmobile (pronounced “ap-teek” mobile) solution, nestled among other companies in DEMO’s “Payment and Entry” section.
Its solution is described as turning “your smartphone into a mobile credential” that can then be used to open doors and other applications in lieu of a badge ID card. Using near field communication (NFC) technology, it allows selected smartphones (many Androids, though the iPhone requires an NFC-enabled sleeve) to take the place of custom-made security cards. Their demo (at DEMO) only ran for the standard four minutes, covering many typical solutions such as acting as a card key for doors. But a conversation with company officials later revealed that, indeed, enabling pull printing via smartphone and aptiQmobile’s technology is a potential use application.
Diane Kehlenbeck, director of technology alliances, explained the company’s long-standing business in these areas – such as being a leader in the receiving side of the security credential system – has allowed the company to creatively use the smartphone as a security credential. In this $1-billion business, mobile credentials are used more and more all the time, and one of aptiQmobile’s demo videos highlights its advantages in terms of cost and turnaround times in a university setting. In addition to “pull printing,” as we see in enterprises, smart cards or their equivalent are often used for enabling (and accounting for) student printing.

Near field communication (NFC)
From my industry perspective, until recently I was most aware of NFC positioned as a potential “replacement” for QR codes, which have been one of the “shining stars” of the hard-copy business over the past few years. (See “January 2010 Observations -- From the QR Code Sandbox — and Will QR Codes Help Printing?”). But, of course, NFC capability has recently become built in to printers, where users can “touch and print” with their mobile devices. It’s an interesting development, essentially adding a new i/o. (Remember when the first Wi-Fi or even USB printers seemed amazing?) We would expect a common new communications interface to be added to printers, just like other devices. But aptiQmobile does one better, I maintain, by taking advantage of the pervasiveness of smartphones and adding them to an expanding ecosystem that already includes pull printing.
Example of NFC used as a new printer connectivity option
Marketing principle: The first application of new technology mimics the old … but just wait!
With smartphones and mobile devices, generally, most of us in the business have immediately locked on to the train of thought that “printing from mobile” is a direct analogy to printing from PCs, which has driven the industry for so many years. If smartphones are replacing desktops, how (and how much) will they print? There has been a great deal of speculation on the topic. One recent industry report on printing from mobile devices is titled “Mobile Devices: Friend or Foe of the Printing Industry.” I also wrote a recent piece on the Mopria Alliance and will be leading a seminar titled “How, Why and When (and When Not) to Print From a Mobile Environment" at the upcoming Business Imaging Expo on Dec. 10-12 in Las Vegas.
Conclusion
What we see with aptiQmobile, as stated above, is a relatively new ecosystem in which pull printing has a role (if a somewhat limited one so far). And smartphones, based on both their capabilities and pervasiveness, are available, via creative and competent vendors like Ingersoll Rand, to change the printing landscape in an indirect but potentially very important way.
With smartphones, we have a world that has changed completely and forever, and printing habits and patterns will not simply migrate from how we have done it in the past to how we will do it now and in the future. But without painting the game as a simple “win-loss” template, printing and imaging has a chance to prosper in some still unimaginable ways.
